The Builder and the Giver

One of you solves it. One of you smooths it.

How a Builder and a Giver carry hard things together: where you’re good, where it rubs, and what to say.

Find out which you are

About a minute of quick taps. Then send it to them.

Where you’re good together

The Builder gets things done and the Giver makes sure people feel looked after while it happens. Together you could run a household, a team or a family reunion.

Where it rubs

The Giver agrees with the plan to keep the peace and quietly resents it. The Builder thinks the plan worked.

What helps

The Builder asks ‘what do you actually want?’ and waits. The Giver answers before checking the Builder’s face.

A Builder might say

“What do you actually want? Not what’s easiest for everyone.”

A Giver might say

“Thank you for handling it. Now let me take something off your list.”

Loving each other

If you love a Builder

  • If you just want them to listen, say so in words. They’ll switch gladly once they know.
  • Tell them plainly when they’re running themselves into the ground. They won’t notice on their own.

If you love a Giver

  • If they seem fine, ask again. Their first answer is often about keeping you comfortable.
  • When they finally say no, take it well. It cost them something to say it.

The two of you
